Murphy ‘s Laws

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Edward Murphy was working for an aviation firm in California stated that “If there is a wrong way to do something, then someone will do it.” His colleague George Nichols rephrased the remark as: “If anything can go wrong, it will” and called it Murphy‘s law. Murphy‘s law is very famous as every body face it very practically. If you’ve buttered a slice of bread and it falls from the hand, it will invariably land on its buttered side. This is often cited as proof of Murphy’s Law. Many laws attribute to Murphy. Some of those say nothing is as easy as it looks and everything takes longer than you think. If a screw falls down from hand it always reaches the most inaccessible corner.

Dealing with loved ones

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

There is always a special place in our heart for those who are very close to us. No matter how many people we meet in life, the status that a wife, husband or children enjoy in each other’s mind is always exclusive. Having said this, these are the very same people, who bear the brunt of our mood fluctuations, inconsistent thought processes and the incessant breakdown of our emotional balance. Is there anything we can do from our end to help them tolerate with us better? One thing we can avoid doing is not to take them for granted. We should understand the fact that just because they are our kith and kin, we are not entitled to assume complete liberty over our behavior towards them. They still need a space for themselves and that space needs to be respected. It should also be our prime duty to ensure that their self-respect and individuality is upheld.

Prevention is better than cure

Monday, January 19th, 2009

The medical field has really grown by leaps and bounds in the recent decades, although exposure of new diseases has kept pace with it. Technology is so advanced that almost every disease that was considered fatal 30 or 40 years before is curable now. Typical examples are polio, small pox and even cancer. What many people tend to ignore is the fact that preventive medicine is much more effective than the curative one, even though, in reality, it is the curative medicine that is more popular. Instead of regaining lost health, striving to preserve the health that is originally available to us should be a more sensible way of handling health. There is so much research done and so many documentations on what can be done to avoid a specific ailment, deficiency or disease. Besides, there are some practicing physicians, who give a greater emphasis to preventive treatment rather than curing a specific ailment after it has occurred. It is the duty of every human being to make use of this and lead a healthy life.

Clear Blue Sea

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

The reflection of light from the sky is the reason for Blue Ocean. The light from the sun scattered by small particles on the way through the atmosphere is the cause for the blue sky. The blue light is scattered the most due to which the sky appears blue. The same reason explains why the sky appears red at sun set. Blue refracts and scatters the more strongly than green, which affects the color as seen from above the water. Water molecules and many dissolved substances such as iron and copper salts in domestic water absorb some red and orange frequencies more than rest of the spectrum. The residual light therefore looks green to blue. This can be demonstrated by adding a few drops to a glass of water and shinning a torch through it. The mixture appears blue when viewed at a right angle to the light source, and red if you look straight in to the light source.

Cordless Phone

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Cordless phone was invented by George Sweigert. Cordless phones are based on wireless transmission and frequency modulation. Cordless phone is an FM transmitter/receiver. The frequency range of cordless phones lies between 26.6 and 49.8 MHz. The main components of cordless phone include base unit connected to fixed telephone line and the portable unit. The range of cordless phones is usually 100 metres and their power is about 500 mill watts. The two way wireless communication between the portable and base units enabled by the radio wave transmission and reception devices present in the base and portable unit. The signals emanating from the telephone are converted to radio frequency in the transmission side and in the receiver side the radio frequency signals are converted to original signals. Cordless phones need a rechargeable battery, which is charged by keeping the portable handset on the base unit.

How do Microwave ovens work?

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Microwave ovens are one of the most useful inventions of 20th century. Cooking is made very easy now days with Microwave ovens. Microwave radiations are generated in microwave ovens by the electrons movement under the combined force of radial electric field and axial magnetic field. Microwave ovens have vacuum tubes that generate electrons from heated cathodes. The movement of these electrons under the combined force generates microwave radiation. Glass and plastic are the best utensils for microwave ovens. Metallic containers should not be used in microwave ovens. Unlike conventional technique in which first the container surface is heated and then the material is heated, in microwave radiation heating, the material in the container is heated while container remains unheated. Due to radio interference, the microwave operation can affect Television, radio or similar equipments. When there is inference, it may reduced by reorienting the receiving antenna of radio or television. Microwave ovens must be placed in flat, stable surface to hold its weight and heaviest food likely to be cooked in the oven.

Home and Living – Living as a couple

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Living as a couple may not seem easy in the beginning, but successful couple figure out a way of doing it in the course of time. What is most predominant is that there has to be a very good degree of understanding between each other. Both partners should attempt to understand the likes and dislikes of the other. The husband should know what puts off his wife and what turns her on. Similarly, the wife should attempt to know what goes down well with her husband and what does not. They should first be very clear of the fact that no two persons are the same and hence, they should not be expecting the other person to behave or react exactly how they want them to for any given situation. They should be ready to receive responses or reactions that are different from what they have in mind. They should also learn to appreciate the other person’s point of view. Normally we tend to get into an illusion that what we think is the only right way of thinking.
